The Marble Falls High School track and field program hosted the Mustang Relays Feb. 29.

Teams from Burnet, Fredericksburg, Gatesville, Lago Vista, Lampasas, San Antonio Davenport and Wimberley competed against the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs. Burnet, Lago Vista, Lampasas and Marble Falls compete in District 24-4A.

“Any time you get a chance to compete against teams you’ll see at district early in the season, it benefits everyone involved,” Marble Falls head coach Austin Silva said. “You get to see where you are at from a competition standpoint and what you need to improve on by the time April gets here. Because they will see those athletes again.”

The best finish among the Burnet County teams belonged to the Bulldogs’ varsity. They earned 112 points thanks to gold medals won by Victor Aviles, Noah Crawford, Brayden Hill, Grant Jones, Colton Stanford and the 400-meter relay team of Khris Kassner, Crawford, Jones and Stanford.

The Mustangs finished eighth in the team standings thanks to points from Tyler Hamlin, who took double gold in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Silva also singled out Isaac Larranaga for finishing third in the triple jump with a new personal best of 41 feet and Cameron Graham, who was fourth in the long jump with leap of 19-4 for a new personal best. Larranaga is the starting goalie for the Marble Falls High School boys soccer team, which won the District 25-4A title March 1 thanks to beating Florence 3-0.

The Lady Mustangs finished fifth in the team standings propelled by freshman Madison Cuplin, who won the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump. The Lady Dawgs finished sixth in the standings.

Silva noted that junior Kylie Roberts earned double silver for her finishes in the discus and shot put.

In the junior varsity division, the Lady Dawgs finished fourth overall with 76 points, while the Lady Mustangs were eighth. The Mustangs were fourth in the boys junior varsity division, while the Bulldogs finished sixth.

Overall, Silva believes the meet accomplished many objectives that include great competition, new personal records for many athletes, and a glimpse of where everyone can improve as the calendar turns to March.

“Getting Marble Falls to host track meets again is something I wanted to bring back when I got here,” he said. “A big thank you to everyone involved and we are excited to make this an annual event.”
